Keeping the Edge Since 1982: The Lansky Sharpeners

Founded in 1982 by Dave Lansky, Lansky Sharpeners was born out of necessity. As an avid hunter, shooter, and fisherman, Dave frequently found himself far from any professional knife sharpening services. After too many outdoor excursions with dull blades, he decided to come up with his solution.

Dave had no formal training in sharpening or manufacturing, but he was determined to build a better field sharpener. In his garage workshop, he began tinkering with various stone configurations and honing angles. After months of experimentation, he created the first Lansky sharpening system.

Unlike cumbersome wheeled grinders or flimsy handheld stones, his system allowed the blade to be clamped in place and the jones moved across it for a guaranteed consistent bevel angle every time. The compact all-in-one design and foolproof sharpening process meant anyone could sharpen like a pro on the go.

Dave proudly showed off his invention at knife and hunting shows, where it quickly attracted an enthusiastic following. As demand increased from outdoorsmen circles, he rented a small commercial space to begin manufacturing the Lansky sharpeners full-time.

Over the next decades as the business grew, Lansky Sharpeners continued releasing improved innovations for fishing hooks, serrated blades, household scissors, and more while retaining Dave’s original all-American design ethos focused on durability, practicality, and game-changing demonstration.

Today, Lansky Sharpeners maintains its status as the go-to sharpening solution for millions of hunting, culinary, and gardening enthusiasts who want to save time and money by sharpening their edges.

After 40 years, the small garage-based company Dave founded continues bringing razor sharp sharpeners to people worldwide who value quality maintenance on their tools. Just as a reliable knife sharpening tool should be, Lansky is still the most rock-steady name to keep the things you value most performing their finest.

FAQs

Is Lansky made in the USA?

Lansky Sharpeners, known for their quality knife sharpening systems, is a US-based company. While many of their products are designed in the USA, not all of them are necessarily manufactured there.

What angle should I use my Lansky knife sharpener?

The angle you should use on your Lansky knife sharpener depends on the type of knife and its intended use. Lansky’s professional knife sharpeners typically offer multiple angle options:

  • 17° angle: For razor blades, X-Acto blades, or similar tools.
  • 20° angle: Ideal for kitchen cutlery knife and slicing knives.
  • 25° angle: Suitable for hunting and outdoor knives.
  • 30° angle: For heavy-duty knives that see a lot of wear and tear.

Choose the angle that best fits the knife’s purpose and the original angle of the blade.

How do you sharpen a serrated knife with a Lansky?

To sharpen a serrated knife with a Lansky sharpener, use the serrated hone designed for this purpose. Glide the hone back and forth across each serration or scallop on the knife. It’s important to match the diameter of the hone to the size of the serrations for effective sharpening.

Are Lansky angles inclusive?

Lansky knife sharpeners precisely establish a 22.5-degree bevel angle on each side of the blade edge. This creates an inclusive final edge angle of 45 degrees— Lansky’s optimal geometry refined through testing for achieving incredibly sharp, durable edges across knife types.
